Success and Wellbeing Services (SWS)

Milcom offers free support from the moment you enrol, throughout your studies, and for 12 weeks after you complete your course.

Our Success and Wellbeing Services (SWS) program is designed to empower you through flexible, timely, and confidential support whenever you need it. You will be assigned an experienced Success and Wellbeing Coach who provides tailored guidance to help you:
– Stay on track with your studies
– Overcome personal or academic challenges
– Achieve your learning and career goals

SWS is a State Government-funded initiative that ensures all VET students can succeed, regardless of life circumstances.

Life can be challenging. Studies, work, and personal commitments can feel overwhelming. MILCOM’s SWS program is here to help you navigate those challenges and keep your goals within reach.

Who is eligible?

The focus of SWS is:
– students who are facing complex barriers to completing their training, or
– who are falling behind, or
– may be at risk of withdrawing from training.

Eligible students are those who are enrolled in a qualification listed on the STL or are undertaking accredited training in a Skills SA subsidised project, including:
– Apprentices and trainees
– School enrolled students undertaking subsidised VET
– Fee for Service students in classes with subsidised students

Students must also:
– Have support needs that require individualised support beyond the normal supports an RTO is expected to provide.

You can also speak directly with out Success and Wellbeing representative for confidential guidance tailored to your situation.

Academic Support

– Guidance with practical skills and hands-on learning
– Study strategies, time management, and goal setting

Whether you need extra help with a specific topic or general study advice, Milcom’s experienced trainers and support staff are here to guide you.

Accessibility Support

We are committed to ensuring all students can fully participate in their training. Support includes:
– Literacy and numeracy assistance
– Sign language interpreters or other communication aids
– Mentoring and one-on-one guidance for learning difficulties
– Flexible learning arrangements where required

Milcom works with students to tailor support to individual needs, so every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Pre-Training Review

Prior to enrolment, Milcom conducts a Pre-Training Review to confirm that the selected course is appropriate for the student. This review considers the student’s existing skills, experience, qualifications, language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills, and support needs, ensuring informed enrolment decisions.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Assessment

Students may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where they believe they already meet the competency requirements through previous study, work experience, or life experience. RPL assessments are conducted in a fair, valid, and evidence-based manner.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)

All students are required to complete an LLN to identify any support needs. Results are used solely to determine appropriate learning and assessment support and do not disadvantage students.

Reasonable Adjustments

Milcom provides reasonable adjustments to training and assessment for students with identified needs, in accordance with legislative requirements. Adjustments are made without compromising the integrity of the unit of competency or assessment outcomes.

Early Intervention Strategies

Milcom implements early intervention strategies to support students who may be at risk of not completing their course. This may include additional academic support, trainer consultation, learning plan adjustments, or referral to support services.

Milcom recognises the importance of mental health and wellbeing in achieving success. Our team provides:
– Confidential support and guidance
– Access to external counselling or referral services if needed
– Practical strategies for managing stress, work-life balance, and study pressures

We encourage all students to seek help early, so challenges can be addressed before they affect your learning.
